Treatments for Ingrown Hairs on Male Face
Whenever you shave the skin, there are many different factors that can affect the smoothness of your face. From the method of hair removal you rely on (razor, shaver, straight blade, etc) to your after-care measures – you may or may not place yourself at an increased risk to suffer ingrown hairs.
To treat the irritation and inflammation that often occurs when shaven hairs regrow at an angle or curl back into the skin – consider the following treatment options:
a) Tweezers:
With a pair of tweezers in hand, you can treat existing ingrown hairs by removing the source of your discomfort. When you are able to remove a hair from the face by pulling it from under the skin – you are treating what is called an extrafollicular hair. However, severe cases of ingrown hairs produce what is referred to as transfollicular hairs, which may require the assistance of a dermatologist.
b) Exfoliation:
If you gently scrub the face using a product that contains salicylic acid, you can remove dead skin particles that can clog your pores and hinder the natural pattern of hair growth on the face. When hairs are forced to deviate – ingrown hairs are often the result.
c) Take a Break:
If you are able to, it is sometimes a good idea to take a short break from shaving to allow ingrown hairs and razor bumps to heal. Just remember – when you resume shaving – it is important not to shave too close or you will encounter the same problem all over again.
d) Laser Hair Treatments:
Hair removal using laser treatments has been effective in aiding individuals suffering a nasty case of ingrown hairs. The destruction of cumbersome hair follicles can decrease the number of bumps that appear when the skin becomes irritated after a shave. You should also keep in mind that it is not uncommon to find some hairs growing back and returning to their usual thickness after 6 to 12 months have passed.
e) Pick Up Embedded Hairs:
Use a sterilized needle to lift the embedded hairs responsible for your ingrown hair problem. This treatment method decreases the overall irritation attacking the face when the tip of a hair curls back and starts to grow into the skin.
f) Use Antibacterial Soap:
To combat the bacteria that may cause ingrown hairs to worsen and become infected – make sure to wash your face (twice per day) with antibacterial soap.
