Ingrown Hair on Chest
Whether you finally waxed the chest for the ladies or ran into a bit of trouble with the razor, the threat of ingrown hairs is a problem that many shavers face when it comes to removing hair from this part of the body. To enjoy an irritation-free experience, it is suggested to become familiar with the typical causes of this widespread condition.
Appearance
Ingrown hairs arise when hairs become trapped under the skin or make contact with sharpened tips that curl back into the epidermis. Localized inflammation sets in, which brings about visible irritation, itchy skin, and a tingly sensation [1]. The site often becomes sensitive, tender, or painful to the touch. Sometimes, ingrown hairs cause small blemishes to form – typically called ‘razor bumps.’ If the inflammation worsens, infection may arise – causing small pockets of pus (pustules) to form on the surface of the skin. In the worst of cases, erupted pustules can cause scabbing and permanent scarring.
Causes
When shaving the chest, you probably never stopped to think of all the different factors that play a key role in whether or not you will suffer irritations of the skin – like razor bumps and ingrown hairs. The kinds of clothes you wear to sharing your friend’s razor are often overlooked when it comes to dissecting an ingrown hair problem. However, these details can greatly contribute to the inflammation and damaged hair follicles associated with this common occurrence. Other causes include:
a) Irritating Session of Waxing:
The ripping and tearing of hairs that occurs during a session of waxing can cause ingrown hairs to develop during the regrowth period.
b) Pulling at the Skin:
When you pull the skin while shaving the chest, you can remove hairs too closely and cause ingrown hairs to develop when it comes time for regrowth to emerge out of follicles.
c) Pores Too Clogged:
Bacteria, dirt, sweat, oil, and dead skin cells can clog your pores and cause ingrown hairs to develop soon after hair removal.
d) Too Much in a Rush:
If you rush through the process of shaving the chest, you run the risk of cutting or nicking the skin. Ingrown hairs can develop when the natural pattern of hair growth is compromised, which includes inflammation and contact with bacteria.
e) Tight Shirts:
Wearing a tight shirt and other pieces of clothing can cause the friction and irritation that leads to ingrown hairs.
