Ingrown Hair on Blacks

Since curly or coarse hair is a common characteristic for African Americans, the threat of ingrown hairs is much greater, especially when it comes to shaving the face, throat, and neck. Black males are notorious for suffering noticeable and uncomfortable reactions to shaving that can result in permanent scarring. However, knowledge is power when it comes to preventing this condition from occurring in the first place. Let’s start with the common causes of ingrown hairs.

Appearance

While ingrown hairs can appear anywhere hair grows, some of the most common places to note include the beard, legs, and pubic region [1]. This particular condition arises when hairs are left behind with a sharp tip that can penetrate the skin after emerging from the hair follicle. Curly and coarse hair has a tendency to grow sideways into the skin or curl back, which often causes localized inflammation accompanied by pain or discomfort. Other symptoms include itchy skin and a noticeable rash. Sometimes, infection takes place when pus collects under the skin.

Causes

You don’t have to shave or wax in order to suffer a round of ingrown hairs, as the condition can take place on a natural basis. However, to avoid the cases that do have something to do with hair removal, consider some of the following common causes:

a) Infections and Bacteria:

Fungal infections, bacteria, and acne can cause ingrown hairs to develop or worsen a chronic problem.

b) Hair Removal Irritation:

Depending on the type of skin you possess (oily, sensitive, dry, etc), you may or may not experience irritation when using tweezers, shavers, razors, or other means of hair removal. Avoiding this kind of irritation is important because if you disrupt the hair follicle, you run the risk of developing ingrown hairs.

c) Muscle Tension:

Ingrown hairs can appear after a clean shave simply because your muscles were tense at the site of hair removal.

d) Finished Too Fast:

If you fail to take your time when shaving, the chances of suffering ingrown hairs in the future greatly increase.

e) Unsanitary Equipment:

Rusty razor blades, used clippers, and dirty shavers can irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs to form after a fresh shave. It is important to discard disposable razors and disinfect blades with rubbing alcohol to eradicate lingering bacteria. When heading into town for a clean cut, you should also make sure your local barber does the same.
